- Event in probability theory
An event is a collection of possible outcomes of a random experiment.
An event is a subset of , the sample space, i.e. .
Special cases
- the whole sample space is called the certain or sure event
- the empty set is the null event
Combining events
We can combine events with the usual set operations:
- complement to get a collection of outcomes not in the event
- intersection of two events to get their common outcomes when both are true
- union of two events to get the outcomes when at least one of them is true, possibly both
